Stachia + Phillip = Engaged! {Kansas Engagement Photographer}

Well...the changes are coming! Just slower than I thought! A couple of more days and hopefully I'll be ready to unveil it all!!!

For now...I had so much fun working with Stachia and Phillip on Saturday. I'll be covering their wedding this summer...so we took some time to get some amazing engagement shots! I've known Stachia as far back as I can remember. We all used to walk to school together and her brother was in my class. Once, her brother and I were having a rock-throwing contest and I guess I won when my rock landed on Stachia's forehead and sliced it open! That's the only time I remember having to go to the principal's office! I'm still feeling bad about that one!!!

Ch..ch...changes! Changes are coming!

Woohoo! Be on the lookout for some changes around here!!! I'm not sure on the timeline but the blog and website are going to be updated SOON! I can't wait!!! I went with this blog a year ago hoping to be able to upgrade if my business plan worked out. Things are moving steadily along, and I've found the upgrades I wanted! SO...the blog will be more gorgeous than ever...soon!

For now...enjoy this shot of a barn taken somewhere in central Kansas. Travis could probably tell you where we were. I have no idea!

Flowers in Bloom!

I snapped these while we were at the Arboretum last weekend. I can't believe I have neglected my blog all week! I have been busy...just not with sessions. The editing, putting up galleries, sending off orders, packaging orders, contacting clients, scheduling for the coming months all take time too. Sometimes, I just have to step away from the computer and get things done. Plus, last week was crazy for us...Travis had a scope on his esophagus (everything is fine!), we had company one night, the kids' activities, and Easter break made for not much time for my work. I'm not complaining though...just trying to excuse myself from not blogging all of last week. I hope you had a blessed Easter!

The S Family! {Kansas Family Photographer...Brooke Jantz}

I met up with the S family at the Arboretum in Overland Park Sunday morning...before the snow hit! We started out at 8:30 with a cool 45 degrees and a bit of a breeze. By the time we left it was raining, 10 degrees cooler, and snow on the way! But we had some fun anyway. The girls were adorable, loving sisters and mom, dad, and I caught up on old friends. I was in KC for a workshop so we worked out this session for the same trip. I'd love to hit up the Arboretum this summer when it is in full bloom! It's gorgeous already...but can only imagine how beautiful it is at it's peak.

Easter Mini Session...Mr. N

We pulled out the baby chicks again yesterday for Mr. N's session. He thought they were pretty cute! And, just to set the record straight...they are NOT real! I have had so many people comment they thought they were real!!! They are very cute and life-like...but I don't need any chickens on the farm. My two dogs probably wouldn't let them enjoy the farm very long at all! At any rate, I am offering my Easter mini's through next week if you haven't made an appointment and can't resist these chicks! When I was just about to pack up to leave, Miss B surprised me with a hug. She would have let me stay the whole day, I think. She loved my pettiskirts and umbrellas and all the other fun stuff in my basket. And she kept asking for more pictures...it was pretty cute! This session was so different for me...no two year-olds to chase around, everyone did exactly what I said, and we were finished in like 20 minutes! And most of that time was just trying to get their beautiful dogs to look my way. I knew I would love this family as soon as I walked through their door and two gorgeous Golden Retrievers greeted me. A fun exercise! 10 in 10

Yesterday I took an assignment proposed on a photography forum to take 10 pictures in 10 minutes. Doesn't seem hard but it is definitely a challenge to get 10 different images in a short amount of time. It forced me to look at my surroundings a bit differently, just looking for a more creative shot. I actually went out back, behind the farm, where there is a TON of junk! It's actually in the process of getting hauled away so it was a great opportunity to find some hidden treasures before it is all gone. Junk is, after all, a photographer's dream! I don't think any of my images would win any competitions; I'm under no illusions about that! But it was a great exercise and a couple of the images I really like! Hope you enjoy seeing our farm...Happy Friday!!

Took the kids out last night with these cute little umbrellas...they thought they were going to blow away holding on to them! I think we are all ready for spring...and some rain would be lovely! Hope this one puts a smile on your face today!!!

I love taking pictures of my kids. That's what drew me to photography. I wanted better "snaps" of my kids. I always loved what I got from our photographer, but it was the pictures in between I was never happy with. I love snapshots and realize that not every picture has to be a portrait. We need those images that tell the story of our lives, of our day-to-day routines, and it helps when they are in focus!

I know it seems way too early to start working with 2010 graduates (especially for the moms of those students!) but I would like to do mini sessions with my senior reps in March/April so they have a chance to earn their print credits before their full session in the late summer/early fall. It's been a busy week! I bought these flowers last weekend in hopes of getting some gorgeous images to share with all of you this past week. I just never had time to get to them! Stevie+Andrew...the Engagement

I've known Stevie for a couple of years...met her when she was singing with our own Barry Ward and Travis was playing bass for him. She is a very talented musician and has plans to make it big-time. Along came Andrew...and together I think they will make it far! I had a blast photographing them on Saturday...super fun couple, willing to try everything I threw at them! I can't wait to photograph their wedding this summer in Colorado!

Emma's turn

Miss Emma got her hair chopped yesterday and donated it to Locks of Love...so proud of her! She really wanted to keep that long, stringy mess but agreed to do it when we talked about donating it to someone who needed it more. She swears she's going to grow it back out. We'll see. But after the cut, we went to snap a few images, and, as always, Emma had lots of ideas on how she wanted to pose. It's so hard to get her to act naturally in front of the camera...and even harder to get a natural smile! But we worked it out and we both ended up having fun, especially on the old caboose!

I love my little boy and am so proud of him! I think he has the most tender heart and is going to be a really neat kiddo. I am excited to see what God has planned for his life; I know it is something special. I had fun getting him in front of the camera yesterday...he complained a bit about the chilly wind but he was a trooper and made my heart melt with his poses. He knows how to work the camera!

We had a longer-than-usual session yesterday to capture Mr. C in all his newborn glory. He wasn't in the sleeping mood...and probably thought this lady moving me all around is crazy! But, in the end, we got some amazing shots and was well-worth the extra time. I hope Mom got a nap in after I left. She had a long night followed by a long day. Here's hoping these images will bring a smile to your face this morning!

Flowers on a cold, snowy day

We are finally getting some snow! Both yesterday and today it has fallen from the sky without the usual wind, resulting in a blanket of white. Too bad it is only 9 degrees out! And with Carter still in his cast, we won't be going out to play anytime soon. I love the snow, because without it, southwest Kansas is nothing but shades of brown in the winter.

On Sunday, at the grocery store, I picked up some tulips and iris to help bring some color back to these dull days of winter. I figured the least I could do is share them with you...maybe they will lift your spirits today! (Oh and tomorrow I have a newborn shoot so be looking for those images coming soon!)

Out with the old...

This elevator probably has a long history with our little town. But I don't know what that history is. Well...I do know it was at one point a Grano elevator (because that's what my mother-in-law has on her Facebook) and it was owned by Shrauner's at one point (since their name is up there!) and Collingwood (now ADM) owned it before selling it to us. It's great for grain storage (and the occasional senior picture!) but the old elevator is quite an eye sore. It's supposed to be getting torn down this week...of course, it's already Thursday and they haven't started yet so I don't know when it will actually happen. I'm just glad it didn't happen before today, when I finally decided I better get a few shots before it comes down. The weather is gorgeous today...near 70 degrees! Blue skies with some puffs of white, sunny, no wind...my kind of photography weather! Anyway...I tried some new techniques and think these photos are as good as this elevator is ever going to look. Enjoy!

'Tis the slow season!

Right after the holidays, the photography business tends to slow down a bit. I have a few things on the books in the next few months but nothing going on right now. Thus, the slow blog! I'm busy trying to get everything organized and up to date for the new year though so I appreciate the break in sessions.

I am currently offering a free 8x10 for any newborn sessions booked now through April...so if you are currently enjoying the bliss that is pregnancy, give me a ring and we can set up a newborn appointment! Newborn sessions should take place in the first two weeks after birth...and preferably closer to around 5 days new.

And just to add some excitement to the slow season, our son, Carter, broke his leg on Sunday at Grandpa's house. We were out of town but headed back already. Got the call when we were a couple of hours from home so we just met at the hospital. By the time we got there, they already had a temporary cast on it and he was about ready to go home. I took him yesterday to get his "real" cast put on...he picked out a KU blue color.

He's been so tough through the whole ordeal. I think Grandpa's had it worse than Carter! He's had some pain but since he got the cast, he complains more about it itching than anything. It could be a long four weeks!

The Wii has been his friend the last couple of days! I don't really mind but I bet he gets sick of it before long. For now Batman and Star Wars Legos are getting worn out!

Kansas Pet Photographer? Maybe!

The only thing harder than chasing down a 2 year old to get a great shot is chasing down a puppy. Make that 2 puppies. I've taken quite a few pictures over the last few weeks but they just haven't been blog-worthy. The dull, blah-ness (that's a word in the Dictionary of Brooke) outside this time of year just doesn't make the best portraits. Now, if we could get some snow, there's a different story!
But today, our contractor came over and finished our fireplace (which now looks SO gorgeous!), and I was trying to get some pictures of it tonight. Travis brought the dogs in and I thought it was the perfect time to get a shot of them, finally. I don't know if it was the fuzzy blanket or the warm fire...but whatever, they sat fairly still and let me get a few good snaps of each of them! You can't really see the fireplace in these...but look at these pups! They are both getting so big!
Jaco (the golden retriever) has a beautiful blond coat and the sweetest personality. He loves the kids...and does a really good job of being gentle around them. Molly (the German shorthair) is starting to learn her role as a hunting dog. She hasn't gotten a lot of field time, but Travis was impressed when he took her out. She needs some training with commands but has a knack for sniffing out the birds (and the bunnies).

This isn't exactly new...I've been offering it but finally just got to put together my first one! These books are too cute and a great keepsake for the whole family. One side of the book hold pictures from your maternity session; the other holds those favorites from the newborn session. How perfect!

Brightest Moon of the Year...

I always think about getting a pic of the moon but I either forget or decide to be a wimp and not brave whatever weather we are experiencing at the moment to shoot it. But tonight, I had to get a shot. As we were driving toward the east around the time the moon was rising, I wished I'd had my camera...it was a beautiful image. The sky was very purple and blue and this perfect moon was slipping up through the feathery clouds. I'm so glad it wasn't too cloudy tonight, making it possible to get a shot of the brightest moon of the year (so says Yahoo anyway!). Enjoy!

Kansas Sunsets

Growing up, there was a lady in our church who was a very talented artist. She used her gift in many ways and blessed our church every so often by drawing beautiful scenes...usually of sunsets...as her talent share during the worship service. I remember sitting in the pew watching every stroke she made with the oil pastels, in awe that she could turn a blank canvas into something so beautiful in a few short minutes. When she finished, she would dim the lights in the church, turn on a multi-colored spotlight on her drawing, and play some music. Everyone would be reminded of God's beautiful creation and his many blessings in our lives. I loved when she would share!

I still can't draw for anything, but I sure love to photograph beautiful sunsets. Kansas has some beautiful sunsets throughout the year...mostly because you can see the whole horizon with hardly a tree to even get in the way of the gorgeous colors. When I see a sunset like last night, it brings this woman to mind...who so many years ago, blessed me and my faith by her willingness to share her God-given talent on a random Sunday morning. This one's for her!

New Year, New Offerings...and a little Reflecting

In 2009, Brooke Jantz Photography will continue to grow and change. When 2007 began, I had no plans of a "real" business. I was still just learning how to operate my camera and figure out what to do in Photoshop. But in 2007, I read every article, bought too many books, spent hours and hours on the computer, and never relented in my quest to learn more about photography. Not much has changed since then.

I still spend countless hours learning all I can about my craft. I did jump into business last spring (admittedly before I was ready), but I have never looked back. God has truly blessed me in this venture.

I have learned in this past year, a photographer is not the sum total of her equipment...and a good camera can not make you a good photographer. I have learned Photoshop in the wrong hands can be dangerous (just look at my early stuff for proof!). I have learned (let me paraphrase Ratatouille), "not everyone can become a great photographer...but a great photographer can come from anywhere..." I have learned, that if you dream it and ask God to be part of that dream...it can happen.

I know 2009 will be a great year! I have some new products to offer, new digital packages, and new session types. I even plan to venture into the wedding arena.

I just want to leave you with a peek at what a difference 2 years makes. The first shot is with my D80, still on auto, with the pop-up flash....and a horrid sepia conversion in Paint Shop Pro. Still, I love the pic because it's my baby girl...she is six months old in that picture. *tear* The second is from a few weeks ago of a 5 month-old in my studio. Shot with the D700 (mind you, my D80 would have looked very much the same in studio), on full manual (only way I shoot anymore), and lightly processed in Photoshop. I know I still have a long journey ahead to become the photographer I want to be....but I just wanted to share how far I've come since first pulling my first dSLR out of the box.

Meet Jaco

We went all the way to Phoenix, AZ to pick up our new puppy last weekend. My friend raises goldens in San Diego and agreed to meet us in Phoenix. What a trip! Three kids, a new puppy, and mom and dad trying to see every cactus in Arizona...made for an interesting drive home! But we love Jaco and are so happy to have him home on the farm. He seems to love it here, despite the 12 degrees that greeted him when we got home. He's got some built-in warmth though, so he doesn't seem to mind! He and Molly were fast friends and they have done great together. I think Jaco is teaching Molly how to be calm. He is the epitome of a Golden Retriever. The kids adore him...he fits right in here in Kansas!

I brought Jaco into the studio this morning hoping to get some better pics than I've gotten so far. Turns out...although he's good with "down" and "sit"...he's not so good with the "stay" yet. But he did pretty good...no complaints here. I can't even get a shot of Molly in studio!

I had the pleasure of working with my former pastor's wife and daughters yesterday. They moved to our church when I was in high school and he ended up doing our wedding. Their family holds a special place in my heart! I got to do the younger daughter's senior pics last spring and was excited to be able to shoot their family. Yesterday was supposed to be the whole family but their son couldn't make it in the end so we just did a Mother-Daughter session. It turned out to be one of the most fun sessions I've done! It helps that Mom and Daughters have such a wonderful, loving relationship. And they were fun! Thanks ladies...hope you enjoy your sneak peek (and hope you can see it from California Mom!).

What a year...

I have truly been blessed this past year in my new venture. I have reconnected with old friends, met many new ones, and shared current friends' joys...all through the blessing of photography. I am honored to have captured so many memories for so many families...I am striving to continue improving and growing as a photographer and as a person to be able to grow this business to its potential. I am excited to see what the new year brings...but first, a recap of the last year. Thank you to everyone who has trusted me with your precious memories...

Sneak Peek...One last session before Christmas

This is officially my last session before taking a "vacation" for a couple of weeks to get through the Christmas season and enjoy the time with my family! I was excited to shoot this beautiful family, though, and was happy the snow didn't get in the way of our plans today. These boys are beyond adorable...but sitting in front of the camera isn't their favorite thing to do! We got some smiles out of them anyway and had fun trying to find new ways to get their attention. Here are just a few quick ones I pulled off early to give Mom this sneak peek...more to come in the gallery!

I'll have announcements up later this week concerning the closing of the studio and when I'll reopen. I'm taking appointments now for January...check the blog soon for a special I'll be doing in January!

Sneak Peek...My neice and nephew!

Well, we were supposed to do this on Wednesday but my nephew threw up just before they were supposed to come over. So...we nixed it. We tried this morning but now my neice wasn't feeling too hot though we didn't really realize it til pictures were almost over. She was kind of in that mood where you couldn't tell if she was just being ornery or really didn't feel well. Turns out she didn't feel well. Hopefully it will be short-lived like it was for her brother. Poor momma can't take much more! These two just told us last weekend they are going to have a new baby brother or sister in their house next May. Litte "A", his birth mom, and his parents have been a big inspiration to me. I feel like I'm surrounded by adoption stories...from my sister-in-law being adopted 2.5 decades ago to my cousin's adoption of her sweet little girl just a few weeks after my youngest was born. I also have a couple of friends in the process of adopting from across the world. But on the heels of Mr. A's adoption, I have found myself wanting to give to these families.

In honor of choosing adoption, I will provide any adopting family one free family session any time in the first year after the adoption is final. It will include a DVD of a slideshow similar to A's slideshow and a discount on prints. I will be limited to one or two sessions for this per month. First of all...I need to say a big thank you to the K family for use of their barn in these family shots. I've wanted to shoot there for some time but just haven't had the right opportunity. I'm so happy we got this family out there! They have 2 really beautiful old barns and I very much enjoyed getting to use them! THANKS!!!

And I was super excited to shoot this family because they were up for about anything and we had beautiful weather! We did the barn, some field shots just before sunset and studio. We tried to get some of the two little ones at the end but they were pooped from their long day...we did get a few shots, though, in spite of sweet little A looking at me like I was crazy when I told her to say, "Rock Chalk Jayhawk!" Even at 18 months she has been swayed to the other side...but man is she cute! Thanks guys!!

I had the great pleasure today of photographing our new little buddy, Mr. A. His mom and dad are very good friends of ours so he is very special to us. C and A found out three months ago that A's birth mom had chosen them to be his parents. How cool is it to get to pick your own parents! His birth mother made a very wise decision, and I believe God is already blessing all them in a very real way. A is going to grow up in a loving, God-fearing home knowing that his life is celebrated by so many people. I am so honored to get to be part of his life and see him grow up. And, of course, I could not wait to get him in front of my camera. He was a tiny little peanut and just wanted to keep his eyes open for the first hour or two. After that, we got the house nice and toasty and he crashed...just the way I like them! Enjoy your sneak peek...and congratulations again, C and A! Love you guys!

Senior Sneak Peek

Yesterday we braved the chilly weather to finish K's senior pictures. She toughed out the cold, and we ended up with some amazing shots. We trekked around Copeland-Montezuma looking for great light and unique locations. Our favorite was a field of CRP right before sunset. K has been so much fun to work with as one of my senior reps. I'm still in disbelief she's a senior (can't imagine how her mom is feeling!) but am proud to know her and call her a friend. Enjoy this quick peek...I'll have a slideshow up within the next week.

I shared last week a few pics from my side of a photo swap with a fellow photographer. We met on KU's campus to do photos for each other. Originally we were going to do each other's families, but we decided to not take the kids that weekend beacause we knew it would be busy. Today our grade school put on a small concert for our local veterans. The program honored the best among us, those who, at one point in their life wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America " for an amount of "up to and including my life." The colors were presented, the National Anthem sung, the Pledge of Allegiance recited. I even got choked up as I looked around our humble gymnasium and saw everyone's hands over their hearts and the brave souls we call our veterans with a proud look on their faces. I don't think it was pride in what they'd done either...it was more pride in seeing these young children learning to love America as they do; pride in seeing the community come together to honor those still serving; pride in a flag they'd fight to defend even today, no matter what age has done to cripple them. THANK YOU just doesn't seem like enough...and it isn't. Today was a demonstration of the greatest thing we can do for these veterans: teaching our kids what it means to respect and honor our flag, our country.

Meet Molly!

No, Molly is not the name of my new camera. Though I think she deserves a name too...(seriously...LOOK at these pictures!). We got a new puppy this weekend. Travis has wanted a hunting dog for almost as long as I've wanted a Golden. So...somehow we are getting both almost at once! My new puppy will be here in less than a month. I think it will work out beautifully and our dogs will be best friends. Molly is a German Shorthair mix and we think she's beautiful! Hopefully, she'll be a great hunting dog too. The kids are already in love with her. Maddie was walking around calling her "Wawwie." I've got to record that! I should be working on a ton of other things right now but decided Molly needed a proper introduction. (That, and I didn't get to play with my new camera much this weekend so I had to test it out!) So, here she is...Miss Wawwie!

On Saturday evening, Travis and I met up with Sarah and her family on the campus of the University of Kansas. It was gorgeous! Lawrence in the fall is just stunning. I miss it so much!! We graduated from there 8 years ago so it was fun to be able to have pictures taken on campus. Sarah's family was adorable...thanks so much for swapping! I hope we got something you can use...here are just a few. I promise we got a few with eye contact! It was great to meet you and your family...we will definitely have to do this again!

I had a busy weekend and am still trying to catch up this morning. But I had to come on the blog and announce our winner from the Halloween Mini's! Little Miss Ladybug received the most votes...her momma will get a $25 gift certificate to use on a future session!!

I had so much fun for my birthday weekend. Travis and I drove up to my sister's on Saturday morning and watched the 2nd half of the Sunflower Showdown at her house. Afterwards, we met up with another photographer and her family for a session swap...I'll share some from that session later this week! Saturday night we went to Stanford's Comedy Club...so much fun! Sunday afternoon we spent at the lovely home of Anne and Randy doing a portrait party for 6 families. It was the most beautiful fall day you can imagine complete with a picture perfect yard. I'll be sharing sneak peeks from those sessions starting tomorrow.

We got home around 11 last night...today will be catching up on laundry and obsessing at the computer to make sure I have some printable images!!! Check in later this week for some beautiful sneak peeks!

I've been trying to get everything caught up this week as the next couple of weeks are going to be crazy busy for me! In the process, I realized I never posted any of my pictures from our trip to Colorado a couple of weeks ago. We went out to Pueblo on a Monday evening in hopes of capturing the peak of the fall colors in southern Colorado on Tuesday. But the weather did not cooperate. I got more winter colors than fall! We drove down to Cuchara through a blizzard and decided to not drive up the mountain for fear of getting stuck. I was kind of bummed but was determined to get some shots of the countryside. On the way back we stopped every place we saw a hint of fall! Travis was a great sport about it all and stopped, turned around, went wherever I directed him...we had a great time just being able to talk without having to listen to the kids whine or fight or ask for another movie! What's funny is, we spent most of our time talking about silly things the kids do and how much fun they are. Oh, we talked about other things too...like our plans for this business and the farm, our hopes for a trip this winter, our dreams for the future, how fast 10 years has flown past, how fast the next 10 years is likely to fly...that's what road trips are for! And for pictures...so without further rambling from me...

I will run the contest next week but can't wait to show you a few any longer! I turn 30 this Halloween and just love that my birthday is part of the magic of childhood. For me, Halloween was always about the fun of getting dressed up and going to see all of our neighbors and then getting sick on the candy! And of course, always turning another year older. This year is a little more special...a time for me to look back on what I've accomplished in the first 30 years of my life. I've been blessed with a great family and know that God is not finished with me yet. I'm sure I'll have more thoughts once my birthday is actually here...for now...on with the show!

I don't think I've ever gone a whole week without updating the blog! I guess I've been busy! Actually, it rained so much here over the weekend that Travis hasn't been able to get in the field for harvest. So, on Monday, we decided we would go see the peak of the fall foliage in SE Colorado. Great idea...except that it snowed the whole time we were there! At any rate, I did take some pics and will share them later in the week. But, for now, I have a sneak peek from the weekend! Hey everyone! Just want to let you know what my schedule is looking like for fall pictures. I'm starting to get booked up and don't want you to miss out because you thought you had more time to book.

My October weekends are booked. I still have openings for my mini sessions but am expecting those to book quickly. For weekend shoots, all I have left are the mini sessions. I do have a couple of weeknights I will book but those are limited.

I have one weekend left in November. I will not be booking any appointments after Thanksgiving for Christmas pictures. I will keep appointments to a minimum through Decemeber (likely limited to newborns and maternity only). I still have plenty of weeknights in November but will try to keep those to a minimum as well.

Just keep this in mind if you are planning to book but haven't called/emailed yet. The mini sessions will be your best bet for getting family pictures done. Just don't wait til the last minute!!

Well, I had planned to get out to our sunflower field and take some great pictures. But I didn't get there in time. But I went out last week after the flowers had started to droop and turn brown. There are a few stragglers so a few pretty ones left. I snapped a couple and that was it. Really, who doesn't love a sunflower?

Digital Negatives

There is an ongoing debate in the realm of professional photography as to whether or not we should offer clients the digital files of their pictures. There are great arguments to both sides so it will continue to be a discussion for many more years. I've decided to leave the debates to those who have time to discuss such things. I'm going for the more cut and dried approach...let my clientele decide!

I just want to serve my clients and give them what they want and need. So tell me...would you be willing to pay more up front to be able to have a digital file of your photos. Would you want to buy your entire session on one CD or buy them individually because you really only want one or two. Should I do away with prints altogether or would you like the option to buy prints from me as well?

I'm not going to mislead you, it would be more expensive to buy the digital files outright from me. However, you would then have the ability to print out as many pictures in any size you want for as long as you want. I don't have details worked out because I really just want to know if this is something you want or if you'd rather just see your prints come directly from me. My sweet girl turned 7 today. She's quickly becoming a beautiful young girl with all the extra trimmings that come with that...helpfulness and sass, eagerness and stubbornness, knowledge wrapped up in innocence. She squeals when she's happy, growls when she's mad, guffaws when she laughs. She knows way more than I do (if you ask her), but still likes a good snuggle sometimes. She's reading at nearly a second grade level and is just absorbing everything she learns in school. Emma is taking gymnastics and wants to take tennis lessons...but she can also hit the golf ball further than me, loved playing t-ball this summer, and has no desire to take up dance like I want her to. She's all about kittens/cats this year and has a favorite stuffed animal named Purry. If it's girly and pink, she probably wants it. I am so proud to be her momma and hope that she'll continue to grow and learn and share life with her friends and family. She's a beautiful girl, inside and out! Love you, Emma!! Happy Birthday!!

My in-laws celebrated 35 years of marriage yesterday! To celebrate, this weekend we all got together for family pictures. We haven't done that since their daughter got married...which was before any grandkids came on the scene. It was a little tricky using the self-timer and getting everyone to look at the camera at just the right time, but I think we did it! Happy Anniversary!

These mini sessions will take place at my home-studio and will last around 20-30 minutes. You will have 8-10 proofs in your online gallery from which to choose for your package. There is NO SESSION FEE!
I will have three "sets" from which to choose for your family Christmas portraits. Two will be outdoor sets: a casual barn set with hay bales and pumpkins; a more formal wrought iron and greenery set; and a studio option.

$200 includes the session, the online gallery, 50 custom Christmas cards, (1) 16x20 signed, mounted and sprayed print (upgrade to canvas for $65). Take 10% off a la carte items. To reserve your appointment, you must pay a $50 deposit which will be credited toward your order and is non-refundable. The balance of $200 is due the day of the session; balance of the order is due upon ordering.

My sister was here for the weekend for our combined class reunion. So...all the cousins got some QT in...and here's one shot of the 3 three boys on Friday night rigth before sunset. This is my neice and she thinks she's the next Fancy Nancy! I was so glad my sister wanted to do some pictures in her dress-up outfits. She's just too stinkin' cute!

Miss J is 6 days younger than my Maddie. The girls play together pretty well considering they are both the biggest 2-year-old Divas you've ever met. Maddie likes to make J jealous by going to J's mom and sitting in her lap. Then she just looks at J waiting for her reaction...which can either be completely ignoring it or tears. It's kind of cute! I think J and Maddie are going to be always be best friends. I love that our kids have their cousins so close in age.

Miss O and I wandered all over Dodge City yesterday afternoon finding new and different locations. It was a little humid with all our recent rains so we had to take a time-out for Sonic, but we had so much fun. We did come back here and do some studio but I've only just started to work on the session so these are just a few from the beginning. I may share a few more later in the week but this week is going to be BUSY! I have a 2 year-old, a Sweet 15, and a maternity! Look for more fun sneak peeks this week!!!

Brooke Jantz Photography.com!!!!!!!!!!!! My new home on the web! I have been working on this most of the summer and am so excited to finally unveil it to all of you. Many of you have already seen it, either by accident (forgetting the blogspot tyring to get to here!) or because I've sent you there for your gallery. But it has been a work in progress for so long. It's still got some new things coming, but I finally got to shoot my cover model! And the site is coming together. So why not show it off!

I will continue to blog a few times a week as it is much easier to update the blog. Plus, the blog is more interactive. But the website will be where you can view all my galleries of my best work, where I'll post galleries for clients, the spot with all the info when you book a session, and a few extra perks I can only do on the website.

I just put up a slideshow of my Cover Model and hope you will check it out. She was a dream to shoot! She's got the photography bug, too, so she had lots of fantastic ideas and really worked the camera. She said she got lots of ideas from watching America's Next Top Model.

By almost 2 weeks now...and I've finally gotten some pictures of her. I've decided two-year olds are the hardest! And your OWN two-year old is the worst! LOL! But it's still fun and a challenge to find a way to get them to have fun and get some good shots. I ended up giving her handfuls of Cinnamon Toast Crunch to keep her occupied...which she promptly shoved the entire handful in her mouth! So...we have several like this where her mouth looks stuffed. Nice. I'm going to try for some more outdoor shots...if it ever stops raining! (Not that I'm complaining!) Here's a couple from our shoot last week. Fun times!

I am supposed to be baking cupcakes right now (Emma's having a back-to-school cupcake party here at 4:30!!!) but I keep opening up photoshop to play with these pictures. The girls were just so awesome the other day...lots of ideas, energy, and just plain fun. I think it shows in their pictures. So...here's a few more of Miss S...her face will be gracing my website!!!

Where has the time gone?

Yesterday was a little strange for me. My daughter had her first day of First Grade. It was just a little surreal...she's not really old enough for that is she? *I'm* not really old enough for a first grader...am I? Really? How can I have a first grader when I remember first grade so vividly?

I remember I started drying my own hair with the hair dryer and, well, didn't do a great job at it. I remember my mom actually explaining to my teacher why my hair looked like "that". I remember Jed almost setting our class on fire by holding a piece of paper over a candle on the teacher's desk. I remember Mrs. Kaberlein's face like I just saw her the other day (wait! I did see her the other day in Target...that was fun to introduce Emma to *my* First grade teacher). I remember the class put on a skit for our parents...the story of the Tortoise and the Hare. I think I was the tortoise...or maybe I just wanted to be. I remember our reading group was Nathan, Connie, Jason, Travis and I. I remember getting in trouble for racing Jason to be first to finish our desk work. I remember Dictation...I can still smell that paper!

So how can my first born be ready for all of this? How is it possible when she was just my little baby not long ago? Sometimes Maddie gives me moments of dejavu...Emma was so much fun at that age. She loved Dora and Blue's Clues, she was my constant companion and rarely threw a fit. Now...she chases the boys on the playground, sings Camp Rock songs all over the house, and thinks I'm the biggest dork alive. Except when she got off the bus yesterday and gave me a big hug. And what was even sweeter was Maddie lighting up when she saw Emma and running over to her for a hug. She missed her big sis! Carter missed her too...I think he was kind of bored yesterday.

Enough of the memories! Here are some pictures from yesterday when Emma got on the bus. Notice the Jonas Brothers shirt? She's had this outfit picked out for the first day for a couple of weeks!

My new Cover Model!

The winner of my cover model contest finally had time yesterday to come over and do her shoot. In winning the contest, she also won a free mini session for a friend. They came along together and we had a blast! We shot for about 4 hours both in studio and all around town. I found a couple of new locations right here in our little town! Who knew? These are just a handful I picked out late last night to edit...I'll share more when I have some time to work on them. I've decided these two don't ever take a bad shot though! :) Thanks girls...it was so much fun!

This is my husband's nephew who will turn 4 in about 6 weeks. His mom wanted some pictures for invitations so here's a few to preview! It was a short and sweet session since the yucky bug was in our house that day. We'll get some more closer to his birthday!

What a fun session this was! I love the sumemr-time feel we captured with these and hope they will treasure them. This is from the session the other night in my in-law's yard. Isn't it gorgeous! Obviously, we made it home from Colorado and had a great time. Enjoy your weekend!!

All the pretty flowers...

I had a session tonight with another beautiful family. It was an outdoor session in my mother-in-law's great yard. She has an amazing yard with lots of flowers and colors and she's generous enough to let me use it for shoots. I got there early tonight, so while I waited, I shot some of the flowers in bloom.

We are off to Colorado tomorrow for a day! Looking forward to just getting out of Kansas for a bit!!

We have the sickies in our house today! YUCK! I hate it when my babies aren't feeling well. Yesterday it was Maddie and today it's Carter. Thankfully, it seems to be a short-lived bug so hopefully it will hold true and Carter will be out riding his bike again soon!

I've only proofed a handful from this session but every one has been great! Miss R knows how to work the camera! She requested the book shot and then i added a little to it. I've been in a Photoshop mood lately!

And I will be gone the next couple of days and then will be running like mad to get Maddie's birthday party put together on Friday and Saturday. I may "see" you on Friday...if not, see you next week!

Sneak Peek...The "A" Family

Ok, this family is so much fun!! I used to babysit for them and their son was the ring bearer for our wedding. It's so strange to see them all grown up...but I love the way they interact and how good and loving they all are together. And silly! We tried just about everything and ended up with some really neat shots. Plus, Miss R got her own little session...I'll be posting those tomorrow. She loves the camera!

I just want to share these anyway!!! My sweet baby turns two next weekend and we've been out taking pictures for the party. I was trying some different stuff because these are just for me and I ended up blowing the whites of her shirt (that means the white is WAY overexposed...OOPS!). At any rate, I think her expressions are so cute so here they are on the blog. Hopefully, I'll be able to get some better ones soon!

This little guy is going to be a big brother soon! I think I've talked his momma into letting me do some pics of her cute little tummy before the big day. But this day was all about Mr. R...he would do anything, one time, and only if we gave him a lick of his sucker. LOL! But we got some good shots so hopefully Momma will love these...how could she not with those eyes!
